From Explosions To Success: How Some Leaders' Approach To Failure Fuels Innovation

I know many leaders who wouldn’t have congratulated their people on the explosion of a big project on launch day.

The quality of good leadership is to recognize your role and your goals!

“Mr. Musk offered congratulations to the SpaceX team on Twitter. “Learned a lot for next test launch in a few months,” he said.” (NY Times)

By such a simple act, Mr. Musk creates an agile and innovative culture:

? Healthy failure culture.
Mistakes are a sign of hard work and courageously pushing the limits.

? Psychological safety.
Show me the team that celebrates and cheers while the project shows a “rapid unscheduled disassembly” on launch day – and I show you an agile, innovative and successful company.

? Fearlessly seeking learning opportunities.
The value is in the learning, not in the rocket.

While most leaders aim to avoid such big explosions, great leaders create a culture in which such explosions are a reason to celebrate.
